WHAT IS OPEN DAY?

Melbourne Dance Centre's Open Day is an annual event and our first 
performance for 2022.

Featuring performances from all of the MDC Academies (DanceArts United, Melb Ballet Academy, Theatre Arts, Melbourne Vocal Academy & the Associate Performance Academy), all MDC members will come together to give short sneak previews into the kind of work each class has been building toward. 
The day is laid out into 3 separate shows separated by age group, with each class presenting a short performance demonstration held in a concert style environment. 

Open Day is a great opportunity for all MDC Academy students to get in front of an audience before other in-house and external performances and competitions commence for the year. It is also a wonderful way for all MDC Academy students to meet and get to know and each other, as well as being a chance for parents/guardians, friends and family to come and see what the classes have been learning, and to get a glimpse at what the various academies, classes and levels have to offer.

It's going to be a fun and inspiring day! We hope you are looking forward to this year's Open Day as much as we are!

UNIFORM REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL ACADEMIES

Please note, having a class in it's academies uniform is an important tool in training to encourage team building, comraderie and discipline. (Students not in correct uniform and shoes will not be able to perform)

Melbourne Ballet Academy presents,
The Nutcracker

This year, Melbourne Ballet Academy will be presenting an adaptation of the E.T.A. Hoffman story; ‘The Nutcracker and the Mouse King’ - a story popularised by the famous ballet choreographed by George Balanchine.

After 2019’s successful season of “Red Riding Hood", MDC Artistic 
Director, Alfie Scalia, will once again be directing this year's end of year ballet performance. 
Melbourne Ballet Academy's retelling of The Nutcracker will take audiences on a wondrous adventure through Clara's dream world. With a beautiful and iconic composition by the incomparable Tchaikovsky and performed by the brilliant and talented MBA students, this performance of The Nutcracker is sure to be spectacular. 

Rehearsals will be starting, Saturday 24 July
Please make sure that your child is fully committed to rehearsals and to let us know when your child is needing to be absent. There will not be time to re-teach work set from the week before.

*Under 5 Students will not be performing in MBA's The Nutcracker. Tickets to the show are free for the Under 5 students to come and watch and to be inspired for when they are old enough to perform in the story ballets.

We are very excited to announce that MDC has been invited to perform at the annual Cystic Fibrosis Charity Gala, held at the Grand Hyatt Melbourne (Savoy Ballroom).

A Night for CF – The 'Around the World' Gala Ball is a fundraising event, to help fund the important work of Cystic Fibrosis Community Care. All proceeds raised from fundraising activities go towards supporting people living with cystic fibrosis & their families.

The MDC Directors have selected to work with the Associate Performance Academy students for this performance. This is a fantastic opportunity for APA students to perform in front of a new audience and in a different performance setting. We can't wait for the opportunity to present a performance for such a great cause!

The featured dancers in the performance will be the following Associates:

- Open Advanced C
Students will be performing "Americano", choreographed by Alfie Scalia.

Rehearsals will commence this Saturday 17th July 12.30-2.30pm, and will continue every Saturday leading up to the event (17 July-14 Aug).

Associate Performance Academy members perform “FAME”. A Jazz Dance clip shot on location in Harbour Town, Docklands 2020, for many, was a year to remember and reflect on for many reasons. For MDC Academy members it was a year to acknowledge the love and passion they have for their beloved performing arts. And so, with the guidance of MDC’s incredibly talented and supportive staff, our members decided to take it upon themselves to take back 2020 and to make it their own. In just 6 weeks our determined artists put together an incredible performance that we were able to showcase on the big screen at the Village Drive-ins. And so in celebration of this victory, MDC will be posting some highlights from the performance.

CONGRATULATIONS EVIN & STEPHANIE 

Congratulations to long time MDC Academy dance artists and members of the DAU Associate Program, Evin and Stephanie on receiving their 10 year Award. Their dedication and their passion for the arts is evident, through their pursuit of excellence in their training, through the beautiful work they produce, their individual achievements as well as the love they receive from their peers and audiences. 

Evin began dancing at MDC at the age of 6 and constantly showed an eagerness to learn, displaying a natural sense of style and a deep love of dance. Having now evolved into a mature, edgy and highly skilled dance artist, Evin brings her own sense of identity into her work that emulates the MDC ethos. 

Stephanie began dancing with MDC at the tender age of 3 and has always shown great ambition and an intelligent and deep understanding of story telling as well as a beautiful musical interpretation. Having achieved excellence in technique, Stephanie’s performances show a range and versatility beyond her years. Stephanie is now a member of MDC’s Associate Performance Academy (APA)

We can only imagine what the future may bring for such wonderful young artists!

End of Term Reminder...

Hi Everyone,

Just a quick reminder that Term 1 will wrap up this Sunday March 28. 

Please note some important dates to add to your diaries for the next few weeks!

• Term 1 Make Up Week: Monday 12 April - 18 April**

• Term 2 Commencement Date: Monday April 19

• Open Day Performance: Saturday May 8

• Mothers Day: Sunday May 9 (no classes running)

**Term 1 Make Up Week does not include Thursday classes: (Theatre Arts, Melbourne Vocal Academy & DAU Comp Squad) The rest of the week will run as usual.

Just a reminder that all students are expected to be dressed in full uniform. Each academy has a set of uniform requirements and you can check these details in full via the button below.

It is very important that all students have the correct uniform including shoes for each class that they take. Students not dressed in the correct uniform may be restricted from taking class.

The Get Active Kids Voucher Program is now open! This is a Victorian State Government program to support eligible families with the costs related to sport and recreation activities, including all styles of dance.

Class fees, uniforms and equipment can all be reimbursed, up to $200 per child.

We would encourage families to apply for this fantastic initiative!

Dec 2019, after a successful performance season, the MDC Advanced Associate students spent a whole hot summer day filming in marvellous Harbour Town before moving onto sunny South Melbourne Beach.

Working under the scorching summer sun, these talented young artists enjoyed a day of hanging out and doing what they do best, dancing, having fun and living!

Expertly charming the camera, they produced this sensational performance, A-YO.

A-yo is debuting today in celebration of all things dance as well as the wonderful outdoors. All of us at MDC hope you enjoy all the hard work that’s been put into “A-yo”
